The Winter Universiade…

It all started when competitive games were taking its baby steps. Directed by Father of Modern Olympics “Baron Pierre de Coubertin”, the first of international sports were conducted by USA, France and Switzerland thereby giving a kick-start to the History Of Universiades (1905).

The Winter Universiade 2013 stands second to none other than Olympic Games- the most reputed and victorious of all games. Promoting the strength of human spirit and nationalism, Winter Universiades are held every two years. And this time, the host country is none other than the Romantic Italy.

Trentino (where the universiade has been organised this year) is located in Northern Italy. It is said to be accompanied with high infrastructure facilities, holding experiences in hosting sports events as well. The city’s strength includes its hospitality, environmental quality of the territory and a University of its own. Many venues have been booked to host a variety of sport events at Trentino, Italy. Baselga Di Pine has been booked for speed skating and curling, Monte Bondone for Snowboarding and freestyle skiing, Pergine Valsugana for Ice Hockey, Val Di passa for Alpine Skiing to name a few. Universiades are cultural sport events held every two years in different nations. The multi-sport event to be held this year in Trentino, Italy starts from 11th dec till 21st dec. The cultural programme is also familiar as XXVI Winter Universiade. Universiades are a mish-mash of university and olympiad outlining all multi-sport festivals underneath it. All international level games/events/programmes get conducted by FISU (International University Sports Federation).

The Universiades are seen as the biggest global multi-faceted festival for students/athletes across the globe. To seek that recognition on international level, all competitors get pumped up for 11 days of sport competitions. Cheers and roarings of 1,500-3,000 volunteers accompanied by more than 2,500 participants from 50 countries broadcasted by 100 TV Channels.

The programme currently includes 6 compulsory sports alongside 1-2 optional sports. The optional sports are chosen by the host country itself. The Winter Universiade 2013 Sports Programme grab hold of many Sports Activities. They are:

  • Alpine Skiing

  • Biathlon

  • Curling

  • Figure Skating

  • Freestyle Skiing

  • Cross country Skiing

  • Ice Hockey

  • Speed Skating

  • Skyjumping

  • Snowboarding

Out of hundred’s of international sport events taking place every year, Winter Universiade has it all. From Mountain World Bike Open Championship to Snowboard World Open Championship.
